Change of Plans: My Birthing Story

Hey all!

It's been a while and I feel that 100% but we now have an extra hand and an extra face in the family and his name is Zaeven Christopher Samuels, AKA, my son. And let me tell ya, he wasn't an easy one to give birth to...coming out a whole 8 lbs. and 7 oz and 20 inches. Unfortunately, the plan changed as soon as I went into labor; they saw his head but he decided to lay on my left side right on my nerve. I tried and tried but the pain was unbearable and the epidural couldn't provide me with enough numbness to not feel that pain and so I screamed, yelled, and wailed to get me into a c-section. I'm not going to lie; I was distraught because I really wanted to stick to my original birthing plan but it just wasn't happening and the doctor agreed.

So, there I was twisting and screaming on the bed (still with the epidural) and now being placed onto the OR bed. As mentioned before, the epidural medicine still wasn't enough to keep me still or quiet enough for them to do the procedure so they put me to sleep...completely. I wasn't conscious at all and couldn't see or hear my son being brought out into this world which makes me sad. However, he is healthy and that's all I really care about in the end. The pain wasn't worth it, it wasn't worth having to cry and struggle and writhe in pain for however long it would take to deliver my baby. So, if you're in pain...get the epidural; it doesn't make you weak nor does it hurt, just a little pinch and it helps if you focus your mind and eyesight onto one thing in the room...that's what helped me get through it.

Me Before the Hellstorm

Zaeven Christopher Samuels was born on March 31st, 2021 and came out absolutely perfect with beautiful skin, my pointy elf ears, my chin, and round shaped head. With the additions of his daddy's features of his eye shape and nose; he is the perfect combination of both of his parents. Piedmont Medical Center (the Women's Center) in Rock Hill was one of the best experiences I've had in healthcare. The nurses took care of me every step of the way...building amazing relationships with each of them in the process of healing and taking care of the baby. I definitely recommend this hospital for delivery and pregnancy because they provide you the greatest care and tools for you and your baby. Anyway, I stayed there for about a week instead of the normal 3-4 days for c-section recovery; my hemoglobin was low and I just wasn't looking good enough for them to release me. However, staying a whole week wasn't bad, it actually helped us get even more prepared to take Zaeven home (well, grandma's house because our house has stairs).

I'm not going to lie to you...the recovery process for a c-section sucks especially when you're a busy-body like me. You can't really do much of anything except feed and change the baby and that's about it but it definitely helps when you have a very supportive another half such as mine. Of course, we've had up's and down's but it's our first child so we definitely know there will be more because we do both care so much about our son. We have both learned SO much each and every day through this process as well as learning about what our son likes and doesn't like (which is sleeping at night lol). It's really all about compromise and making sure you communicate when it comes to...well anything but especially a first child together. So, make sure you communicate with anyone who is with you during and after and let them know when you need help! Again, ALWAYS ASK FOR HELP.

So, after having gone through hell and staying a full week at the hospital...I reflect and regret absolutely NOTHING and wouldn't have changed the process at all because I safely and happily have my son...one of the greatest achievements and loves of my life. He lights up my face each and every time I look at him because he is light and all that brings to this world. And now I share with you, my light.
