Hey all,
Happy Saturday!
I wanted to talk to you guys for a second about one of my favorite topics to talk about: mental health. It's been a while since I actually did talk about it and I feel so bad I haven't been more involved in all of the changes that is happening in helping people talk about mental health. I am SO excited to see how many people are speaking up about it especially in the NFL and other celebrities because people look up to these people but who looks OUT for them? Speaking up and about an illness we can't definitely see is important in helping adolescents who struggle and don't have that type of support which causes higher numbers in suicides and suicide attempts.
However, the education system is failing us when it comes to supporting the mental health community and teaching about the warning signs of someone who might be struggling. I am not disregarding the already current programs that are running such as New York and Virgina being the first 2 states making it MANDATORY to have mental health education. Why? Because they've seen the numbers and they know that the numbers are consistently rising. According to Mental Health First Aid and NAMI, "The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that half of lifetime mental health issues set in before age 14, and on average, people wait 10 years before getting treatment" (Source: https://www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org/external/2018/06/new-york-virginia-pave-way-with-mental-health-education-laws/ )
Acknowleding that our youth, the next generation, is dying off and the pandemic is not helping which means we are not helping each other. Helping each other is just being there for someone; weather that is talking, listening, or being active...it's super important to keep uplifting. If you have a story, share it...I encourage it because relating to others is one of the most helpful ways to be there for someone and their emotional state. And no, don't encourage or support the negativity in your experience...support how you made it through.
Below, I'm sharing my story through a poem...again don't look or focus at the negative; see where I am today. Happy, focused, and healthy and I have been ever since that day...and no, I'm not saying I don't have my days where I feel lost and unfocused because I do but I've learned how to control them, to become one with my emotions. And if you take medication to help with your disorder (like me), DO NOT BE ASHAMED OF IT. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to throw away those stupid orange bottles that labeled me as a problem to society. But overtime, those little orange bottles have saved my life numerous times in which I thought I couldn't go on and a lot of people close to me can attest to that.
If any one of you needs to just talk, I don't care about what, I AM HERE FOR YOU. Doesn't matter if we have talked or haven't talked, your life is WAY more worth it by you being here and helping others. So, if you do want to talk...use the contact me page and send me a message!
Enjoy my poem!
