2nd Master's Degree: Are You Crazy? Yes.

Hey all,

I hope everyone is having a better Saturday than me but this is not the complaint post; this is the I LOVE MY MAJOR post. As you all may know (or may not), I'm currently getting my 2nd Master's degree in Fashion Merchandising and Management at The Academy of Art University; a fully online program. And let me tell you, this is the first time I've actually been interested in my education. I love everything about it and I'm only in my 2nd semester which says a lot about the professors and program. You all may think I'm crazy for getting my 2nd Master's degree and I probably am and will forever be in debt but I truly think this will fulfill my happiness and purpose in life.

Fashion is a great passion of mine because it makes me feel good about myself; it makes me feel like a new person with this great confidence. So, I finally decided to learn more about it and I've never learned so much about just one industry and how it has impacted us globally. There is a lot more negative rather than positive behind the fashion industry, a lot more than I realized and I want to be able to change that somehow by eventually opening my own business. The goal is to have a non-profit focused business by giving back to the mental health community. This business will help people who do struggle with mental health illnesses by making outfits that reflect them and their personality; something that defines them instead of a label of being mentally not stable.

Overall, obtaining this degree can really help jumpstart my long-term goal but I know I have to start from somewhere so I want to focus my attention on two areas in the industry: buyer or merchandiser. Being a buyer would mean helping coordinate with the company in buying merchandise according to the season, trend, and other influences. This would be something I would LOVE to do and would be a dream job for sure. The other aspect of it would be merchandising in which I fell in love with because of H&M; the whole concept of setting up a store and putting outfits together in coordinator with the style trends, colors, and season as well as the standards of the company is something I enjoy. However, with this job I would like to work my way up to where I would be in the headquarters or company part of the business. By being a part of this program, I can achieve that.

I'm super excited for this semester because as you can see below; I will be working with textiles and learning about merchandising principles. I am scared though because one of the art supplies required a sketch book and ya girl CANNOT draw but we shall see.

Advice: If you aren't sure or are confident about your degree/major; CHANGE IT. No one is stopping you but yourself; yeah, debt is scary but it'll be paid back. Do what you are passionate about and what you love because you only live once (ugh hate saying that played out saying but it's true). Get creative, get inspired, and most importantly get happy.
